The Cleaner Who Learned English

Nermin had worked as a cleaner in a big hotel in Antalya for eleven years. Every morning she made beds, cleaned bathrooms, and changed towels in thirty rooms. She was fast and careful, and the manager had never found a single mistake in her work.

So they started. Every night, after work, Nermin studied for one hour. She learned ten new words every day and wrote them on small papers. She put the papers on the fridge, on the mirror, and even on her cleaning trolley. Slowly, "towel," "pillow," and "welcome" became her friends.

Together they remembered every place. Finally, Nermin found the watch under a chair in the hotel garden. The lady hugged her for a long time.

The story reached the manager. He called Nermin to his office and said, "You have done something special. We need people who care about guests." He offered her a new job at the reception desk, with a better salary. Nermin could not believe it. "I have only studied English for one year," she said.
