When Kerem's plane finally landed at Istanbul Airport, he could hardly believe that seven years had passed since he had last set foot in Turkey. He had moved to Canada for his master's degree, and what was supposed to be a two-year stay had slowly turned into a life abroad. If someone had told him back then that he wouldn't return for seven years, he would never have believed it.

His younger sister, Elif, was waiting at the with a handmade sign that read "Welcome home, big brother." She had been planning this moment for weeks, even though she had tried to act calm on the phone the night before. When she finally saw him walking through the doors, she before she could say a single word.

Kerem hugged her tightly and admitted that he had been crying on the plane, too, thinking about everything he had missed. He had been told by his mother that their grandmother's health had , but seeing how she looked when he arrived at the family house still shocked him. It was as though time had moved differently for the people he loved while he had been building a new life somewhere else.

That evening, the whole family gathered for dinner, something that hadn't happened in years. Elif had prepared his favorite dish, a that had been passed down from their grandmother, and Kerem admitted that he had never managed to make it taste the same in Canada, no matter how many times he had tried. "If I had known how much I would miss this food," he said, laughing, "I would have learned to cook it properly before I left."

During dinner, his father asked quietly why he had stayed away for so long, a question Kerem had been since he booked his flight. He explained that at first, he had been too busy with his studies, and later, he had been offered a job that he felt he couldn't refuse. He that had built up over the years, and the longer he stayed away, the harder it had become to plan a visit.

His mother reached across the table and told him that none of that mattered anymore, as long as he was finally home. She said that she had been worried he might never come back at all, a fear she had never shared with anyone until that moment. Kerem was told by his sister, later that night, that their mother used to light a candle every year on his birthday, hoping he was safe wherever he was.

Over the following days, Kerem noticed how much the neighborhood had changed. New buildings had been constructed where old shops used to stand, and several of his childhood friends had moved to other cities. Some things, however, remained exactly as he remembered: the smell of fresh bread from the bakery downstairs, and the sound of the call to prayer through the streets each evening.

By the end of his second week, Kerem had made a decision that surprised even himself. He told his family that he was going to look for a job in Istanbul and try to move back . If he had made this decision years earlier, he admitted, things might have been very different, but he was that it wasn't too late to try.

As he stood on the balcony one night, looking out at the city lights, Elif joined him quietly. "I always believed you would come back eventually," she said. Kerem smiled and replied that some , no matter how far, could never truly separate a family that loved each other, and he finally felt, after seven long years, that he was exactly where he was supposed to be.
