Asking for Her Hand

Last Sunday, Kerem's family visited Elif's family for a special reason. They were going to ask for Elif's hand in marriage, following an old Turkish tradition. Kerem was wearing his best suit and holding a big box of chocolates.

Geçen Pazar Kerem'in ailesi özel bir sebeple Elif'in ailesini ziyaret etti. Eski bir Türk geleneğini izleyerek Elif'i oğulları için isteyeceklerdi. Kerem en iyi takımını giymiş, büyük bir kutu çikolata tutuyordu.

Elif's mother was preparing tea and pastries all morning. She was nervous but excited, too. Kerem's parents were carrying a tray of chocolates and a small bouquet of flowers, as tradition required.

Elif'in annesi bütün sabah çay ve tatlı hazırladı. Hem gergin hem de heyecanlıydı. Kerem'in ailesi, geleneğin gerektirdiği gibi bir tepsi çikolata ve küçük bir çiçek buketi taşıyordu.

When they arrived, Elif's father welcomed them warmly at the door. Everyone sat in the living room, and the atmosphere felt both formal and warm at the same time. Elif was serving tea to the guests with shaking hands.

Vardıklarında Elif'in babası onları kapıda sıcak bir şekilde karşıladı. Herkes oturma odasına oturdu ve atmosfer hem resmi hem de sıcak hissettiriyordu. Elif, titreyen ellerle misafirlere çay servisi yapıyordu.

Kerem's father began speaking respectfully, explaining how much his son loved Elif and how happy their families would be together. He was going to ask the traditional question soon, and everyone knew it.

Kerem'in babası saygılı bir şekilde konuşmaya başladı, oğlunun Elif'i ne kadar sevdiğini ve ailelerinin birlikte ne kadar mutlu olacağını anlattı. Yakında geleneksel soruyu soracaktı ve herkes bunu biliyordu.

Finally, he asked Elif's father for permission: "We have come to ask for your daughter's hand for our son." The room went quiet for a moment. Everyone was waiting for the answer.

Sonunda Elif'in babasından izin istedi: "Kızınızı oğlumuz için istemeye geldik." Oda bir an için sessizleşti. Herkes cevabı bekliyordu.

Elif's father looked at his daughter and smiled. "It's her decision," he said kindly. Elif blushed and said, "Yes, I want to marry Kerem." Everyone in the room started clapping and cheering.

Elif'in babası kızına baktı ve gülümsedi. "Karar onun," dedi nazikçe. Elif kızardı ve "Evet, Kerem'le evlenmek istiyorum," dedi. Odadaki herkes alkışlamaya ve tezahürat yapmaya başladı.

Elif's mother was crying happy tears. Kerem hugged Elif's father and thanked him. The two families were laughing and talking excitedly about the upcoming wedding plans.

Elif'in annesi mutluluk gözyaşları döküyordu. Kerem, Elif'in babasına sarıldı ve ona teşekkür etti. İki aile gülüp yaklaşan düğün planları hakkında heyecanla konuşuyordu.

That evening, they all had dinner together, celebrating the happy news. Elif's grandmother told old stories about her own kız isteme day, many years ago. Everyone listened with big smiles.

Before leaving, Kerem's mother whispered to Elif, "Welcome to our family." Elif felt warm and happy. She was going to remember this beautiful day for the rest of her life.
