Grandma Learns the Internet

Hatice was sixty-five years old. She lived in a small village in Rize, near the Black Sea. She had a simple life. She grew tea in her garden, cooked for her family, and talked with her neighbors. She never used a computer or a smartphone. For her, technology was a strange and difficult world.

Hatice altmış beş yaşındaydı. Karadeniz'in yakınında, Rize'de küçük bir köyde yaşıyordu. Basit bir hayatı vardı. Bahçesinde çay yetiştirir, ailesine yemek yapar ve komşularıyla konuşurdu. Hiç bilgisayar ya da akıllı telefon kullanmazdı. Onun için teknoloji tuhaf ve zor bir dünyaydı.

One summer, her granddaughter Elif came to visit from the city. Elif brought a special gift: a new smartphone. "Anneanne, this is for you," she said. "Now we can talk every day, even when I am far away." Hatice looked at the phone. She was happy but also a little scared. "I am too old for this," she said.

Bir yaz, torunu Elif şehirden ziyarete geldi. Elif özel bir hediye getirdi: yeni bir akıllı telefon. "Anneanne, bu senin için," dedi. "Artık her gün konuşabiliriz, ben uzaktayken bile." Hatice telefona baktı. Mutluydu ama biraz da korkmuştu. "Bunun için çok yaşlıyım," dedi.

"No, you are not," Elif said with a smile. "I am going to teach you. It is easy, you will see." The first lesson started. But it was not easy at all. Hatice could not understand the small buttons. She pressed the wrong things. The phone made strange sounds. "I can not do this," she said sadly.

"Hayır, değilsin," dedi Elif gülümseyerek. "Sana öğreteceğim. Kolay, göreceksin." İlk ders başladı. Ama hiç de kolay değildi. Hatice küçük düğmeleri anlayamıyordu. Yanlış şeylere basıyordu. Telefon tuhaf sesler çıkarıyordu. "Bunu yapamam," dedi üzgün bir şekilde.

But Elif was very patient. "Don't worry, Anneanne," she said. "Take your time. We will try again tomorrow." Every day, they practiced together. Slowly, Hatice learned. First, she learned how to answer a call. Then she learned how to send a message. It was difficult, but she did not give up.

Ama Elif çok sabırlıydı. "Merak etme, anneanne," dedi. "Acele etme. Yarın tekrar deneriz." Her gün birlikte pratik yaptılar. Yavaş yavaş Hatice öğrendi. Önce bir aramayı nasıl cevaplayacağını öğrendi. Sonra nasıl mesaj göndereceğini öğrendi. Zordu ama pes etmedi.

After one week, Hatice could do many things. She could make a video call. When she saw Elif's face on the screen for the first time, she was amazed. "I can see you! You are in the city, but I can see your face!" she said happily. "This is like magic." Elif laughed. "You are learning fast, Anneanne."

Bir hafta sonra Hatice birçok şey yapabiliyordu. Görüntülü arama yapabiliyordu. Elif'in yüzünü ekranda ilk kez gördüğünde hayran kaldı. "Seni görebiliyorum! Sen şehirdesin ama yüzünü görebiliyorum!" dedi mutlu bir şekilde. "Bu sihir gibi." Elif güldü. "Çabuk öğreniyorsun, anneanne."

Hatice practiced every day. She learned to take photos of her garden and her tea plants. She sent them to her family. She learned to watch videos and listen to old songs. The phone was not scary anymore. It became a window to the whole world. Hatice was proud of herself.

Hatice her gün pratik yaptı. Bahçesinin ve çay bitkilerinin fotoğraflarını çekmeyi öğrendi. Onları ailesine gönderdi. Video izlemeyi ve eski şarkılar dinlemeyi öğrendi. Telefon artık korkutucu değildi. Bütün dünyaya açılan bir pencere oldu. Hatice kendisiyle gurur duydu.

Then Hatice had a wonderful idea. The women in her village grew the best tea, but they could not sell it easily. The village was far from the big cities. "What if we sell our tea on the internet?" Hatice thought. She talked to Elif about her idea. "That is a brilliant plan, Anneanne!" Elif said.

Sonra Hatice'nin harika bir fikri oldu. Köydeki kadınlar en iyi çayı yetiştiriyordu ama onu kolayca satamıyorlardı. Köy büyük şehirlerden uzaktı. "Ya çayımızı internette satarsak?" diye düşündü Hatice. Fikrini Elif'e anlattı. "Bu harika bir plan, anneanne!" dedi Elif.

Together, they started a small online group. Hatice took beautiful photos of the fresh tea. She wrote simple messages about the village and the women who grew it. People in the cities loved the story and the quality. Orders started to come in. The village women were very excited and grateful to Hatice.

Birlikte küçük bir online grup kurdular. Hatice taze çayın güzel fotoğraflarını çekti. Köy ve onu yetiştiren kadınlar hakkında basit mesajlar yazdı. Şehirlerdeki insanlar hikayeyi ve kaliteyi sevdi. Siparişler gelmeye başladı. Köy kadınları çok heyecanlandı ve Hatice'ye minnettar oldu.

Now the village sells its tea all over Turkey. The women earn more money, and they are happier. And it all started because an old woman was brave enough to learn something new. Hatice often says to her friends, "I am sixty-five, but I am still learning. It is never too late."

Artık köy çayını bütün Türkiye'ye satıyor. Kadınlar daha çok para kazanıyor ve daha mutlular. Ve hepsi yaşlı bir kadın yeni bir şey öğrenecek kadar cesur olduğu için başladı. Hatice arkadaşlarına sık sık şöyle diyor: "Altmış beş yaşındayım ama hâlâ öğreniyorum. Asla geç değil."

Every evening, Hatice makes a video call to Elif. They talk about their day and laugh together. The distance between the village and the city is not a problem anymore. Thanks to a small phone and a lot of patience, Hatice and her granddaughter are closer than ever.

Her akşam Hatice Elif'e görüntülü arama yapıyor. Günlerini konuşup birlikte gülüyorlar. Köy ile şehir arasındaki mesafe artık bir sorun değil. Küçük bir telefon ve çok sabır sayesinde, Hatice ve torunu her zamankinden daha yakınlar.
