Kaan was a student in Germany. He studied engineering far from home. He liked his university, but he missed many things. He missed his city, İzmir. And most of all, he missed his grandmother's mantı.
Kaan, Almanya'da bir öğrenciydi. Evinden uzakta mühendislik okuyordu. Üniversitesini seviyordu ama birçok şeyi özlüyordu. Şehrini, İzmir'i özlüyordu. Ve hepsinden çok anneannesinin mantısını özlüyordu.
One cold evening, Kaan was alone in his small kitchen. The German food was okay, but it was not the same. "I want real mantı," he thought. Then he had an idea. He picked up his phone and made a to İzmir.
Soğuk bir akşam, Kaan küçük mutfağında yalnızdı. Alman yemeği fenaydı ama aynı değildi. "Gerçek mantı istiyorum," diye düşündü. Sonra bir fikri oldu. Telefonunu aldı ve İzmir'e görüntülü arama yaptı.
His grandmother's happy face appeared on the screen. "Kaan! My boy!" she said. "How are you? Are you eating well?" Kaan smiled. "Anneanne, I have a big question. Can you teach me how to make mantı tonight?"
Anneannesinin mutlu yüzü ekranda belirdi. "Kaan! Oğlum!" dedi. "Nasılsın? İyi besleniyor musun?" Kaan gülümsedi. "Anneanne, büyük bir sorum var. Bu gece bana mantı yapmayı öğretebilir misin?"
His grandmother laughed with joy. "Of course! Get your flour, eggs, and water," she said. "First, we are going to make the ." Kaan put the phone on the shelf and ran to get the things. The lesson started.
Anneannesi sevinçle güldü. "Tabii ki! Ununu, yumurtalarını ve suyunu al," dedi. "Önce hamuru yapacağız." Kaan telefonu rafa koydu ve malzemeleri almak için koştu. Ders başladı.
"Now, mix the flour and the egg with your hands," his grandmother said. Kaan tried. Flour went everywhere — on the table, on his shirt, even on his face. His grandmother was laughing. "You look like a ghost!" she said.
"Şimdi unu ve yumurtayı ellerinle karıştır," dedi anneannesi. Kaan denedi. Un her yere gitti — masaya, gömleğine, hatta yüzüne. Anneannesi gülüyordu. "Hayalet gibi görünüyorsun!" dedi.
Step by step, his grandmother showed him everything. "Roll the dough thin," she said. "Now cut small squares. Put a little meat inside each one." Kaan was working slowly. His squares were not perfect, but he did not give up.
Adım adım, anneannesi ona her şeyi gösterdi. "Hamuru ince aç," dedi. "Şimdi küçük kareler kes. Her birinin içine azıcık et koy." Kaan yavaş çalışıyordu. Kareleri mükemmel değildi ama pes etmedi.
"This is harder than engineering!" Kaan said. His grandmother smiled. "I am making mantı for sixty years," she said. "Your mother learned it from me. Now you are learning it too. This is our ."
"Bu mühendislikten daha zor!" dedi Kaan. Anneannesi gülümsedi. "Altmış yıldır mantı yapıyorum," dedi. "Annen bunu benden öğrendi. Şimdi sen de öğreniyorsun. Bu bizim aile tarifimiz."
After two hours, the mantı was ready. Kaan boiled the water and cooked them. Then he made the with garlic and the butter sauce on top. The small kitchen smelled wonderful. It smelled like home.
Kaan sat down and tasted his first mantı. He closed his eyes. "Anneanne," he said quietly, "it tastes exactly like yours." His grandmother's eyes were wet, but she was smiling. "You have the family hands now," she said.
Kaan oturdu ve ilk mantısını tattı. Gözlerini kapattı. "Anneanne," dedi usulca, "tam seninki gibi oldu." Anneannesinin gözleri nemliydi ama gülümsüyordu. "Artık aile ellerine sahipsin," dedi.
That night, Kaan was not alone. His grandmother was far away, but she was also right there in the kitchen with him. "Next time, I am going to make it for you," Kaan said. "When I come home in the summer." They both smiled at the screen.
