Grandpa and the Smartwatch

Rıza Dede was seventy-five years old. He lived alone in a small house in İzmir, with a nice garden. He was healthy and active, but his heart was not very strong. His doctor told him to be careful. His children and grandchildren lived in other cities, so they worried about him a lot. They called him every day.

Rıza Dede yetmiş beş yaşındaydı. İzmir'de, güzel bahçeli küçük bir evde tek başına yaşıyordu. Sağlıklı ve aktifti ama kalbi çok güçlü değildi. Doktoru ona dikkatli olmasını söyledi. Çocukları ve torunları başka şehirlerde yaşıyordu, bu yüzden onun için çok endişeleniyorlardı. Onu her gün arıyorlardı.

One day, his grandchildren came to visit. They brought him a present. Rıza Dede opened the box. Inside, there was a smartwatch. "What is this?" he asked. "It looks like a small clock." His granddaughter, Elif, smiled. "It is a smartwatch, Dede. It is very clever. It can check your heart. And if there is a problem, it can call us automatically."

He still thought it was a silly toy. But he kept his promise, and he wore it every day on his wrist.

He could not breathe well. His legs were weak. He fell down onto the grass. He was alone, and he could not reach the phone.

But the smartwatch was working. It felt that something was very wrong with Rıza Dede's heart. It felt that he fell down. Automatically, without anybody pushing a button, the smartwatch called for help. It called an ambulance, and it sent a message to all his family: "Your grandfather needs help. Here is his location."

The ambulance came very quickly. The doctors helped Rıza Dede immediately. They took him to the hospital. The doctor later said, "Your grandfather is going to be okay. But he was very lucky. If help did not come so fast, the situation was going to be very serious. That smartwatch saved his life."

When Rıza Dede felt better, his family came to the hospital. He looked at the smartwatch on his wrist. "This little toy," he said with a smile, "this little toy saves my life. I was wrong about it. I am sorry, children. And thank you. You give me this gift because you love me, and it keeps me safe."

And it is a gift of love from my grandchildren." Rıza Dede learned that technology, when it comes with love, can be a wonderful thing.
