Ayşe was twenty-three years old when she was sent to a small school in the mountains near Van. The road was long and , and in winter the snow used to close it for weeks. When she arrived, she saw a stone building with one room, one old , and fourteen children of different ages.

The school had very little. There used to be only one book for the whole class, and the blackboard was so old that the letters were hard to read. Ayşe used to buy , notebooks, and pencils with her own . "Never mind," she told herself. "A good teacher needs a heart more than ."

Many children used to walk two hours to school every morning. Some of them came without breakfast, and their shoes were often wet. Ayşe used to arrive early, light the stove, and prepare hot tea with bread. "First we get warm," she said, "then we learn."

There was a quiet boy in the class named Murat. He used to sit in the corner and never raised his hand. His father was a , and the family did not believe that school was important. "Murat will work with the sheep soon," people in the village used to say.

But Ayşe noticed something. Murat used to look at the pictures in the only science book for a very long time. One day she gave him the book. "Take it home," she said. "You can bring it back when you finish." The next week, Murat returned the book and asked, "Teacher, why do people get sick?"

From then on, she answered his questions every day after class. She even went to his house and talked to his father. "Your son has a mind," she said. "If you let him study, he can change many lives." The shepherd was silent for a long time. Finally he said, "Teach him, teacher."

Ayşe stayed in the village for six years. When she was transferred to another city, she gave Murat her last piece of chalk. "Keep it," she said. "Maybe one day you will write something important with it." Murat did not understand why, but he put it in his pocket and kept it.

Twenty years later, the old teacher, who was now retired, received a letter. It said: "The village now has a small . I am its doctor. Above my desk there is a little piece of chalk. Thank you for everything. — Dr. Murat." Ayşe read the letter slowly and wept quietly. A small piece of chalk had written a very long story.
