In 1453, a twenty-one-year-old ruler named Sultan Mehmed II looked at the legendary walls of Constantinople. For over a thousand years, many powerful armies had tried to conquer this majestic city, but its massive triple-layered defense walls had never been broken down by force.
Sultan Mehmed realized that traditional methods would not be enough to open the city gates. Therefore, he brought together the best engineering minds of his era to design unprecedented weapons. He ordered the creation of massive bronze cannons that could fire giant stones over immense distances.
The siege lasted for many challenging weeks, and the defense remained stubborn. When the entrance to the Golden Horn harbor was blocked by a massive iron chain, the young Sultan executed a brilliant tactical plan. He ordered his soldiers to transport dozens of warships over forested hills using greased wooden tracks overnight.
Kuşatma birçok zorlu hafta boyunca sürdü ve savunma inatçı olmaya devam etti. Haliç limanının girişi devasa bir demir zincirle kapatıldığında, genç Sultan parlak bir taktik planı uygulamaya koydu. Askerlerine, düzinelerce savaş gemisini bir gecede yağlanmış ahşap raylar kullanarak ağaçlık tepelerin üzerinden taşımasını emretti.
When the citizens woke up in the morning and saw an entire fleet floating inside their secure harbor, they were struck with absolute amazement. This legendary broke the defensive morale completely. On May 29, the final succeeded, and the city gates opened to the young conqueror.
Vatandaşlar sabah uyanıp güvenli limanlarının içinde yüzen koca bir filo gördüklerinde mutlak bir şaşkınlığa uğradılar. Bu efsanevi manevra, savunma moralini tamamen çökertti. 29 Mayıs'ta son taarruz başarıya ulaştı ve şehir kapıları genç fatihe açıldı.
Sultan Mehmed II earned the historic title 'Fatih' (the Conqueror) after this monumental victory. He did not destroy the culture of the city; instead, he declared absolute religious freedom for all citizens and turned Istanbul into a capital of science, art, and universal architecture.
Sultan II.
