When Leyla's grandmother passed away last year, the old stone house in Mardin that had been in the family for generations was finally being cleared out. Leyla, along with her mother and aunt, had been sorting through decades of belongings when she found an old photograph inside a Quran that had been sitting untouched on a high shelf.
The photograph showed a young woman standing in front of the same house, though the style of her clothing suggested it had been taken sometime in the 1940s. What confused Leyla was that she had never seen this woman before, and neither her mother nor her aunt recognized her either, despite having grown up hearing countless stories about the family.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a name, Hediye, and a date that had been partially by time. Leyla's mother explained that she had never once heard her own mother mention anyone by that name, which seemed strange, considering how openly her grandmother used to talk about family history.
Curious, Leyla decided to visit an elderly neighbor, Halit Bey, who had lived on the same street his entire life and was known for remembering nearly everyone who had ever lived in the neighborhood. When Leyla showed him the photograph, his expression changed immediately, and he sat down slowly, as though the image had brought back memories he hadn't expected to face again.
Halit Bey told Leyla that Hediye had been her great-grandmother's younger sister, a fact that had apparently been kept quiet within the family for reasons he wasn't entirely sure of himself. He explained that Hediye had been sent to live with distant relatives in another city when she was young, and that she had never been spoken of again after that.
According to Halit Bey, it was rumored that a serious had occurred between Hediye and the rest of the family, though nobody in the neighborhood had ever learned the full details, since it had happened before he was even born. He said that if Leyla's great-grandmother had wanted the story to be remembered, she would have told her children about it herself.
Determined to learn more, Leyla began searching through old town records and eventually discovered that Hediye had, in fact, married and lived out the rest of her life in Diyarbakır, just a few hours away. It was reported in a local historical archive that she had passed away decades earlier, leaving behind several children whose might still be living in the region today.
Leyla was told by an that similar family records had helped other people reconnect with long-lost relatives before, and she was encouraged to try reaching out through social media groups dedicated to research in southeastern Turkey. Within weeks, Leyla had been contacted by a woman named Sibel, who turned out to be Hediye's great-granddaughter.
When Leyla and Sibel finally met in person, they were both amazed by how similar their family stories sounded, despite having grown up in completely different cities without any contact for generations. Sibel admitted that her own family had also never fully understood why the two had become separated, only that something painful must have happened long ago.
If that photograph hadn't been hidden inside the old Quran for over eighty years, Leyla realized, this entire branch of her family might have remained lost forever, their story quietly erased by time and silence. Now, the two families have started meeting regularly, slowly piecing together a history that had almost been forgotten completely, one conversation at a time.
