A Day at the Market

Selin is a new university student in İzmir. She comes from a small town. Now she lives alone in a flat. Today is Saturday. There is a big street near her home. Selin wants to buy fresh vegetables and fruit. But she is a little nervous. It is her first time alone at the market.
The market is very big and busy. There are many colorful stalls. There are red tomatoes, green peppers, oranges, and apples everywhere. The sellers are shouting. "Fresh tomatoes! Cheap apples!" The noise is loud. Selin does not know where to start.
"Taze domates! Ucuz elma!" Gürültü yüksek. Selin nereden başlayacağını bilmiyor.
Selin goes to a vegetable . An old man is the seller. "Hello, young lady! Welcome!" he says with a big smile. "What do you want today?" Selin looks at the tomatoes. "Um... how much are the tomatoes?" she asks shyly. "Twenty lira for one kilo," the man says.
"Kilosu yirmi lira," diyor adam.
Selin does not know if this is cheap or expensive. She is new to the city. "Okay," she says quietly. "One kilo, please." The old man looks at her kindly. "You are new here, yes?" he asks. Selin nods. "Yes, I am a student. This is my first time at the market."
Selin bunun ucuz mu pahalı mı olduğunu bilmiyor. Şehre yeni. "Tamam," diyor usulca. "Bir kilo, lütfen." Yaşlı adam ona nazikçe bakıyor. "Buraya yenisin, değil mi?" diye soruyor. Selin başını sallıyor. "Evet, öğrenciyim. Pazara ilk kez geliyorum."
The old man smiles. "Then let me help you," he says. "At the market, you can . You can ask for a better price. Watch me." He shows Selin the vegetables. "These tomatoes are very fresh. Touch them. Smell them. Always choose fresh ones."
Yaşlı adam gülümsüyor. "O zaman sana yardım edeyim," diyor. "Pazarda pazarlık yapabilirsin. Daha iyi bir fiyat isteyebilirsin. Beni izle." Selin'e sebzeleri gösteriyor. "Bu domatesler çok taze. Dokun onlara. Kokla. Her zaman taze olanları seç."
Selin learns a lot. The old man teaches her how to choose good vegetables. "Look at the color," he says. "Smell the fruit. Do not buy soft or old ones." Then he teaches her how to bargain. "If you buy many things, you can ask, 'Can you make a better price?'"
Selin çok şey öğreniyor. Yaşlı adam ona iyi sebze seçmeyi öğretiyor. "Renge bak," diyor. "Meyveyi kokla. Yumuşak ya da eski olanları alma." Sonra ona pazarlık yapmayı öğretiyor. "Çok şey alırsan, 'Daha iyi fiyat yapar mısın?' diye sorabilirsin."
Now Selin is braver. She buys tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and apples. "How many apples do you want?" the man asks. "One kilo, please," Selin says. Then she tries to bargain. "I buy many things. Can you make a better price?" The old man laughs happily. "Of course! You learn fast!"
Şimdi Selin daha cesur. Domates, biber, salatalık ve elma alıyor. "Kaç kilo elma istersiniz?" diye soruyor adam. "Bir kilo, lütfen," diyor Selin. Sonra pazarlık yapmayı deniyor. "Çok şey alıyorum. Daha iyi fiyat yapar mısınız?" Yaşlı adam mutlu bir şekilde gülüyor. "Tabii ki! Çabuk öğreniyorsun!"
The old man gives Selin a good price. He also puts some extra parsley in her bag. "This is a gift for you," he says. "Welcome to İzmir. Come again next week." Selin is very happy. Her bags are full of fresh, cheap food. And she has a new friend at the market.
Yaşlı adam Selin'e iyi bir fiyat veriyor. Çantasına biraz da fazladan maydanoz koyuyor. "Bu sana hediye," diyor. "İzmir'e hoş geldin. Gelecek hafta yine gel." Selin çok mutlu. Çantaları taze, ucuz yiyecekle dolu. Ve pazarda yeni bir arkadaşı var.
Selin walks home with her heavy bags. She feels proud. This morning, she is nervous and shy. Now she knows how to shop at the market. She knows how to choose fresh food and how to bargain. It is a small thing, but it feels big to her.
Selin ağır çantalarıyla eve yürüyor. Gururlu hissediyor. Bu sabah gergin ve utangaç. Şimdi pazarda nasıl alışveriş yapacağını biliyor. Taze yiyecek seçmeyi ve pazarlık yapmayı biliyor. Küçük bir şey ama ona büyük geliyor.
Every Saturday, Selin goes to the same market. She always visits the old man's stall. They talk and laugh. He always gives her the best vegetables and a little gift. The market is not scary anymore. Now it is Selin's favorite place in the city.
Her cumartesi Selin aynı pazara gidiyor. Her zaman yaşlı adamın tezgâhını ziyaret ediyor. Artık Selin'in şehirdeki en sevdiği yer.
