Learning to Ride a Bike

Yağmur is eight years old. She lives in Eskişehir. She has a new bike. It is red and beautiful. But there is a problem. Yağmur cannot ride the bike. She wants to learn, but she is afraid.

Yağmur sekiz yaşındadır. Eskişehir'de yaşar. Yeni bir bisikleti vardır. Kırmızı ve güzeldir. Ama bir sorun vardır. Yağmur bisiklet süremez. Öğrenmek ister ama korkar.

"I can't do it," Yağmur says to her father. "I can fall. I can hurt myself." Her father smiles. "Do not worry," he says. "Everybody falls at first. But you can learn. I help you."

"Yapamam," der Yağmur babasına. "Düşebilirim. Canım yanabilir." Babası gülümser. "Endişelenme," der. "Herkes önce düşer. Ama öğrenebilirsin. Sana yardım ederim."

On Sunday morning, they go to the park. The park has a long, flat path. It is a good place for bikes. There are not many people. "This is a safe place," says her father. "Now, let's start."

Pazar sabahı parka giderler. Parkta uzun, düz bir yol vardır. Bisikletler için iyi bir yerdir. Çok insan yoktur. "Burası güvenli bir yer," der babası. "Şimdi başlayalım."

Yağmur sits on the bike. Her father holds the back of the bike. "I am holding you," he says. "Do not be afraid. Push the pedals." Yağmur pushes the pedals. The bike moves slowly. Her father runs behind her.

Yağmur bisiklete oturur. Babası bisikletin arkasını tutar. "Seni tutuyorum," der. "Korkma. Pedalları çevir." Yağmur pedalları çevirir. Bisiklet yavaşça hareket eder. Babası arkasından koşar.

But then her father lets go. Yağmur is alone on the bike. She is afraid. The bike shakes. And then — she falls! She lands on the grass. Her knee hurts a little. She wants to cry.

Ama sonra babası bırakır. Yağmur bisiklette yalnızdır. Korkar. Bisiklet sallanır. Ve sonra — düşer! Çimenlere düşer. Dizi biraz acır. Ağlamak ister.

Her father comes quickly. "Are you okay?" he asks. "Yes," says Yağmur. "But I can't do it! It is too difficult." Her father helps her stand up. "You can do it," he says. "Try again. Do not give up."

Babası hızlıca gelir. "İyi misin?" diye sorar. "Evet," der Yağmur. "Ama yapamıyorum! Çok zor." Babası onun ayağa kalkmasına yardım eder. "Yapabilirsin," der. "Tekrar dene. Pes etme."

Yağmur tries again. She falls again. She tries a third time. She falls again. She is tired. Her knees are dirty. But she does not give up. "I am trying," she says. "I can do this."

Yağmur tekrar dener. Yine düşer. Üçüncü kez dener. Yine düşer. Yorgundur. Dizleri kirlidir. Ama pes etmez. "Deniyorum," der. "Bunu yapabilirim."

Then something happens. Yağmur is riding the bike. Her father is not holding it. She is alone, but she is not falling! The bike is moving. She is riding! "Look, Dad!" she shouts. "I am doing it! I am riding my bike!"

Sonra bir şey olur. Yağmur bisiklet sürmektedir. Babası tutmamaktadır. Yalnızdır ama düşmemektedir! Bisiklet hareket etmektedir. Sürmektedir! "Bak baba!" diye bağırır. "Yapıyorum! Bisikletimi sürüyorum!"

Her father is very proud. He claps his hands. "Bravo, Yağmur!" he shouts. "You can ride a bike now! I am so proud of you!" Yağmur rides around the park. She is laughing. She is very happy.

Babası çok gururludur. Ellerini çırpar. "Bravo Yağmur!" diye bağırır. "Artık bisiklet sürebilirsin! Seninle çok gurur duyuyorum!" Yağmur parkın etrafında sürer. Gülmektedir. Çok mutludur.

That evening, Yağmur tells her mother everything. "I fall many times," she says. "But I do not give up. And now I can ride my bike!" Her mother hugs her. "You are very brave," she says. "When you do not give up, you can do anything."

O akşam Yağmur annesine her şeyi anlatır. "Birçok kez düştüm," der. "Ama pes etmedim. Ve şimdi bisikletimi sürebiliyorum!" Annesi ona sarılır. "Çok cesursun," der. "Pes etmeyince her şeyi yapabilirsin."
