Sevda is thirty years old. She lives in Trabzon with her mother. When Sevda was a little girl, her father went to Germany to work. Many men from her town went to Germany in those years. They worked hard and sent money home to their families. Her father to come back soon.
But her father never came back. At first, he sent letters and money every month. Then the letters came less often. After a few years, they stopped completely. Sevda's mother her alone. Sevda grew up without a father. She was angry and sad. "He forgot about us," she always thought.
Ama babası hiç geri dönmedi. İlk başta her ay mektup ve para gönderdi. Sonra mektuplar daha az geldi. Birkaç yıl sonra tamamen durdular. Sevda'nın annesi onu tek başına büyüttü. Sevda babasız büyüdü. Kızgın ve üzgündü. "Bizi unuttu," diye hep düşünürdü.
One morning, Sevda was drinking tea when the came. He gave her a letter. The letter was from Germany. Sevda's hands started to shake. She did not know this , but she knew the name on the envelope. It was from her father. After twenty-five years, her father was writing to her.
Sevda sat down. She was afraid to open the letter. For a long time, she just looked at it. Her heart was full of anger, but also . "What does he want after all these years?" she thought. Finally, she opened the envelope slowly. Her hands were still shaking. She began to read.
Sevda oturdu.
In the letter, her father wrote the truth. He explained that life in Germany had been very hard. He had lost his job. He had been too to come home with no money. The years passed, and he felt he could not return. "I made a terrible mistake," he wrote. "I was weak. I am so sorry."
Mektupta babası gerçeği yazdı. Almanya'daki hayatın çok zor olduğunu açıkladı. İşini kaybetmişti. Parasız eve dönmeye çok utanmıştı. Yıllar geçti ve dönemeyeceğini hissetti. "Korkunç bir hata yaptım," diye yazdı. "Zayıftım. Çok üzgünüm."
Her father continued. "I am old and sick now," he wrote. "I do not have much time. Every day, I think about you and your mother. I think about your little face when you were a child. I have no right to ask, but I want to see you one time before I die. Will you an old, foolish man?"
Babası devam etti. "Artık yaşlı ve hastayım," diye yazdı. "Fazla vaktim yok.
Sevda cried. She cried for the little girl who had waited for her father. She cried for all the lost years. She was still angry, but now she also felt something else. Her father was not a monster. He was a weak man who had made mistakes, and now he was old and alone and dying. She felt for him.
For several days, Sevda thought about the letter. It was a difficult . Should she forgive her father? Her mother said, "The choice is yours, my daughter. But anger is a heavy thing to carry. Sometimes we forgive others not for them, but for ourselves." These words stayed in Sevda's mind.
Finally, Sevda made her decision. She bought a plane ticket to Germany. She was going to see her father. When she arrived, she found an old, grey, sick man in a small room. He looked at her and started to cry. "You came," he whispered. Sevda looked at her father for a long moment. Then she took his hand. "Yes, Baba," she said. "I came."
Sonunda Sevda kararını verdi. Almanya'ya bir uçak bileti aldı. Babasını görmeye gidiyordu. Vardığında küçük bir odada yaşlı, gri, hasta bir adam buldu. Ona baktı ve ağlamaya başladı. "Geldin," diye fısıldadı. Sevda uzun bir an babasına baktı. Sonra elini tuttu. "Evet baba," dedi. "Geldim."
Sevda spent two weeks with her father before he died. They talked about everything. It was not easy, but it was . Sevda forgave him, and the heavy anger finally left her heart. "I have learned something important," she says now. "Forgiveness is not for the other person. It is a gift you give to yourself. It sets you ."
Sevda, babası ölmeden önce onunla iki hafta geçirdi. Her şey hakkında konuştular. Kolay değildi ama iyileştiriciydi. Sevda onu affetti ve ağır öfke sonunda kalbinden gitti. "Önemli bir şey öğrendim," diyor şimdi. "Affetmek karşındaki kişi için değildir. Kendine verdiğin bir hediyedir. Seni özgür kılar."
