In a quiet street in Gaziantep, two old lived side by side. Mrs. Hatice was a teacher who loved gardening. Mr. Kemal was a retired shopkeeper who loved silence. Between their houses there was a low wooden , and for fifteen years it had caused them a lot of trouble.
The problem was simple. Hatice grew tomatoes that climbed over the fence into Kemal's garden. Kemal hated the leaves that fell on his clean path. "Your plants are everywhere!" he shouted every summer. "They are my plants, and they are doing no harm!" Hatice answered. After a while, they stopped talking altogether.
Sorun basitti. Hatice, çitin üzerinden Kemal'in bahçesine tırmanan domatesler yetiştiriyordu. Kemal, temiz yoluna dökülen yapraklardan nefret ediyordu. "Bitkilerin her yerde!" diye bağırırdı her yaz. "Onlar benim bitkilerim ve hiçbir zarar vermiyorlar!" diye cevap verirdi Hatice. Bir süre sonra tamamen konuşmayı bıraktılar.
For years, they greeted each other only with a cold look. The neighbours who lived on the street were tired of the . "They are two people who will never change," said the baker. Even the children who played near the fence knew they should not make noise.
Yıllarca birbirlerini sadece soğuk bir bakışla selamladılar. Sokakta yaşayan komşular bu kavgadan bıkmıştı. "Bunlar asla değişmeyecek iki inatçı insan," derdi fırıncı. Çitin yakınında oynayan çocuklar bile gürültü yapmamaları gerektiğini biliyordu.
One cold November, Hatice noticed something strange. The curtains of Kemal's house, which were usually open at seven, stayed closed for three days. No smoke came from his chimney. Nobody walked on the path that he cleaned every morning. She felt .
Soğuk bir kasım ayında Hatice garip bir şey fark etti. Kemal'in evinin genellikle yedide açık olan perdeleri üç gün boyunca kapalı kaldı. Bacasından duman çıkmadı. Her sabah temizlediği yolda kimse yürümedi. Huzursuz oldu.
On the fourth day, she could not wait any longer. She knocked on his door, but there was no answer. She called the neighbour's son, who had a spare key. Together they found Kemal in bed. He had a high and was too to stand. Without help, he could have been in serious danger.
Dördüncü günde daha fazla bekleyemedi. Kapısını çaldı ama cevap yoktu. Yedek anahtarı olan komşunun oğlunu çağırdı. Birlikte Kemal'i yatakta buldular.
The doctor, who came within an hour, said it was only a bad flu. "He needs rest, warm food, and someone who can watch him for a few days," he said. Hatice looked at Kemal's pale face. Then she went home without a word.
Hatice, Kemal'in solgun yüzüne baktı. Sonra tek kelime etmeden evine gitti.
An hour later, she came back with a big bowl of soup, which was still . She also carried a basket that was full of fresh tomatoes. "Eat," she said, "and don't ." Kemal, who had not smiled for years, looked at the tomatoes and let out a weak laugh. "They are good tomatoes," he whispered.
Hatice visited him every day until he was well again. Spring came, and Kemal did something that surprised everyone. He took a hammer and made a small gate in the fence. "This is the gate that I should have built fifteen years ago," he said. From that day on, the tomatoes grew freely, and the two neighbours shared them every summer.
