In Ankara, the last bus of the night was always driven by Mr. Osman. He was fifty-five years old, and he had driven the same for twenty years. At midnight, the streets were empty and the city was quiet. The bus was warm, and the lights inside were soft and yellow.
Ankara'da gecenin son otobüsünü her zaman Osman Bey kullanırdı. Elli beş yaşındaydı ve yirmi yıldır aynı güzergâhta araba sürüyordu. Gece yarısı sokaklar boştu ve şehir sessizdi. Otobüs sıcaktı ve içerideki ışıklar yumuşak ve sarıydı.
His were tired people. Nurses came home from the hospital. Cleaners finished their work in the big offices. Students returned from the library. Osman knew most of their faces, and many of them were by name when they got on the bus.
Yolcuları yorgun insanlardı. Hemşireler hastaneden eve dönerdi. Temizlikçiler büyük ofislerdeki işlerini bitirirdi. Öğrenciler kütüphaneden dönerdi. Osman yüzlerin çoğunu tanırdı ve birçoğu otobüse bindiğinde adıyla selamlanırdı.
One cold night in December, a young man got on at the last stop before the terminal. His name was Burak. He worked as a , and he was wearing a thick orange jacket. His eyes were red. He had worked two that day. He sat in the back seat and was asleep in less than a minute.
At the terminal, all the other passengers got off. Osman stopped the bus and looked in the mirror. The young man was still sleeping. The driver could have woken him up, but he did not. "He is ," Osman thought. "Sleep is more important than the tonight."
Terminalde diğer tüm yolcular indi. Osman otobüsü durdurdu ve aynaya baktı. Genç adam hâlâ uyuyordu. Şoför onu uyandırabilirdi ama uyandırmadı. "Bitkin," diye düşündü Osman. "Bu gece uyku, tarifeden daha önemli."
The engine was turned off, and the lights were turned down. Osman sat quietly and drank tea from his small flask. Forty minutes later, Burak woke up in a . "Oh no! Where are we? What time is it?" "It is one o'clock," said Osman . "You are at the terminal. Don't worry."
Motor kapatıldı ve ışıklar kısıldı. Osman sessizce oturdu ve küçük termosundan çay içti. Kırk dakika sonra Burak panik içinde uyandı. "Olamaz! Neredeyiz? Saat kaç?" "Saat bir," dedi Osman sakince. "Terminaldesin. Endişelenme."
Burak lived in a part of the city where no buses ran at that hour. He did not know what to do. Osman looked at him for a moment. "Get in the front seat," he said. "This bus is going back to the garage, and the garage is near your street. You are not going to walk home in this cold."
Burak şehrin o saatte hiç otobüs işlemeyen bir yerinde yaşıyordu. Ne yapacağını bilmiyordu. Osman ona bir an baktı. "Ön koltuğa otur," dedi. "Bu otobüs garaja dönüyor ve garaj senin sokağına yakın. Bu soğukta eve yürümeyeceksin."
On the way, Osman poured some hot tea into a cup and gave it to Burak. They talked about their families and their jobs. When the bus reached Burak's street, the young man was filled with . "How can I thank you?" he asked. "Just be kind to somebody else one day," Osman answered.
Yolda Osman bir bardağa sıcak çay doldurup Burak'a verdi. Aileleri ve işleri hakkında konuştular. Otobüs Burak'ın sokağına ulaştığında genç adam şükran doluydu. "Size nasıl teşekkür edebilirim?" diye sordu. "Sadece bir gün başka birine nazik ol," diye cevap verdi Osman.
Burak never forgot that night. Every Friday after that, a paper bag with two warm simit was left on the driver's seat by him. Inside the bag there was always a short : "For the best driver in Ankara." Osman kept every note in his glove box.
Osman her notu torpido gözünde sakladı.
