The Power Cut

If the storm continues like this, the electricity will probably go out across the whole neighborhood. This is exactly what happens one evening in an old apartment building in Diyarbakır.

Suddenly, all the lights go off, and the building falls into complete darkness. On the third floor, Yasemin searches for candles in her kitchen drawer. If she can't find any, she will have to use her phone's flashlight all night.

In the stairwell, neighbors begin calling out to each other. "If everyone stays calm, we will manage this together," shouts Kadir Bey from the ground floor, who has experienced many power cuts before. He knocks on each door, checking if families need help, especially the elderly residents living alone.

On the fifth floor, an elderly woman named Zehra Hanım lives by herself. If nobody checks on her, she might feel frightened alone in the dark. Kadir Bey climbs the stairs with a flashlight and knocks gently on her door. "Don't worry, Zehra Hanım," he says. "If you need anything, we are right here."

Meanwhile, families start bringing candles and flashlights into the shared hallway. If more neighbors gather together, the darkness will feel less frightening for everyone, especially the children. Yasemin's daughter, only six years old, giggles nervously in the candlelight. "This is like camping!" she says happily.

Someone suggests playing a simple guessing game while they wait. If the children enjoy the game, the adults will relax too. Laughter slowly fills the dark stairwell, replacing the earlier tension.

After almost two hours, the lights suddenly return, and everyone cheers. "If this happens again," Kadir Bey says, smiling, "we will know exactly what to do." That night, in the darkness, the neighbors have discovered something valuable: even without electricity, a real community always finds its own light.
