Grandma in the City
Şehirde Anneanne
Köyde yaşayan Hatice Anneanne, ilk kez torununu ziyaret etmek için İstanbul'a gelir. Torunu Zeynep ona her şeyi sabırla gösterir.

Hatice Anneanne is seventy years old. She lives in a small village. Her village is quiet and green. There are chickens, a garden, and fresh air. She is very happy there. But she has one dream: to visit her granddaughter, Zeynep, in İstanbul.
One day, Hatice Anneanne takes a bus to İstanbul. It is a long journey. When she arrives, she can not believe her eyes. The city is huge! There are tall buildings everywhere. There are so many cars and so many people. "Oh my!" she says. "This city is very big and very loud."
Bir gün Hatice Anneanne İstanbul'a otobüsle gidiyor.
Zeynep meets her grandmother at the bus station. "Welcome, Anneanne!" she says, and hugs her. "I am so happy you are here!" Hatice Anneanne is happy too, but she is also a little afraid. Everything is new and strange. "Don't worry, Anneanne," Zeynep says. "I can show you everything."
"Merak etme, anneanne," diyor Zeynep. "Sana her şeyi gösterebilirim."
They go to the station. Hatice Anneanne has never seen a metro before. They go down, down, down under the ground. "We are going under the city!" the grandmother says, surprised. "Is this safe?" Zeynep laughs. "Yes, Anneanne. It is very safe. Millions of people use the metro every day."
Metro istasyonuna gidiyorlar. Hatice Anneanne daha önce hiç metro görmemiş. Aşağı, aşağı, yerin altına iniyorlar. "Şehrin altına gidiyoruz!" diyor anneanne şaşkınlıkla. "Bu güvenli mi?" Zeynep gülüyor. "Evet, anneanne. Çok güvenli. Her gün milyonlarca insan metroyu kullanıyor."
Then there is another surprise: the . The stairs are moving! Hatice Anneanne stops. "The stairs are walking by themselves!" she says. "I can not step on that!" Zeynep holds her hand. "It is okay, Anneanne. Hold my hand. Step on with me. One, two, three!" They step on together.
Sonra başka bir sürpriz var: yürüyen merdiven. Merdivenler hareket ediyor! Hatice Anneanne duruyor. "Merdivenler kendi kendine yürüyor!" diyor. "Onun üstüne basamam!" Zeynep elini tutuyor. "Sorun yok, anneanne. Elimi tut. Benimle bas. Bir, iki, üç!" Birlikte basıyorlar.
Hatice Anneanne is nervous on the escalator, but she is also laughing. "This is like magic!" she says. At the bottom, she is proud of herself. "I can do it!" she says. The metro train comes fast. Whoosh! It is very quick. The grandmother holds the handle tightly as the train moves.
Hatice Anneanne yürüyen merdivende gergin ama aynı zamanda gülüyor. "Bu sihir gibi!" diyor. Aşağıda kendisiyle gurur duyuyor. "Yapabiliyorum!" diyor. Metro treni hızlıca geliyor. Vuuş! Çok hızlı. Tren hareket ederken anneanne tutamağı sıkıca tutuyor.
Inside the metro, Hatice Anneanne looks at all the people. "Everybody is looking at their phones," she says. "Nobody is talking!" In the village, people always talk to each other. This is very different. But then an old man smiles at her and says, "Good morning." Hatice Anneanne smiles back. "People are kind here too," she thinks.
Metronun içinde Hatice Anneanne bütün insanlara bakıyor. "Herkes telefonuna bakıyor," diyor. "Kimse konuşmuyor!" Köyde insanlar her zaman birbiriyle konuşur.
Zeynep shows her grandmother many places. They see the sea and the big bridges. They eat fish by the water. They visit old mosques and markets. Hatice Anneanne takes many photos. "I want to show my friends in the village," she says. She is having a wonderful time.
Zeynep anneannesine birçok yer gösteriyor. Denizi ve büyük köprüleri görüyorlar. Suyun kenarında balık yiyorlar. Eski camileri ve pazarları ziyaret ediyorlar. Hatice Anneanne birçok fotoğraf çekiyor. "Köydeki arkadaşlarıma göstermek istiyorum," diyor. Harika vakit geçiriyor.
By the end of the week, Hatice Anneanne is a different person. She is not afraid anymore. Now she can use the metro by herself. She can ride the escalator without fear. "The city is big and fast," she says, "but it is also exciting. I like it!" Zeynep is very proud of her brave grandmother.
When it is time to go home, Hatice Anneanne is a little sad. "I love my village," she says, "but I love the city too now. And I love you most of all, my Zeynep." She hugs her granddaughter. "I come again next year," she promises. "And next time, I can ride the metro alone!"
