Young Al-Biruni looked up at the stars and down at the rocks every single day. He lived a thousand years ago but asked questions like a modern scientist. He wanted to know how large our planet really was.

He did not have modern or airplanes to look at the globe from space. Instead, he walked to a high mountain next to a flat sea. He used a clever tool called an astrolabe and some basic mathematics.

By measuring the of the mountain and the , he solved a great mystery. He calculated the size of the Earth almost perfectly. His was very close to the numbers we use today.

Al-Biruni studied many different subjects like history, languages, and stones. He believed that all cultures were interesting and wrote many books to explain them fairly. He never stopped learning until his very last breath.

The world remembers him as a fearless explorer of truth and science. A crater on the Moon now carries his name to his bright mind. He showed everyone that a single mountain can help you measure the whole world.
