After her children moved out for university, Filiz used to feel quite in her apartment in Ankara. She had always loved reading, but she had never had anyone nearby to discuss books with, since most of her friends preferred watching television instead.

One evening, she had an idea: what if she started a small book club in her neighborhood? If even a few people joined, she thought, it would give her a reason to leave the house and meet new people regularly.

Filiz has never organized anything like this before, so she felt nervous about it. She printed small and put them up at the local café, the pharmacy, and the grocery store, inviting anyone interested to come to the first meeting.

To her surprise, eight people showed up at the local café for the first meeting. They were of different ages, from a university student to a retired engineer, but they all shared the same love for reading.

The group has met every two weeks since that first meeting, taking turns choosing which book to read. Filiz has noticed that the often go far beyond the books themselves, touching on life, memories, and personal experiences.

One member, an elderly man named Necati, told the group that he used to be too shy to speak in front of others, but the book club has slowly given him more . If Filiz hadn't started the club, he admitted, he would probably still be spending his evenings alone.

The club has grown , and now fifteen people attend regularly. Filiz has had to move the meetings to a bigger room in the café because the original table became too small for everyone.

Recently, the café owner offered the group a permanent because their regular meetings bring in more customers on quiet weekday evenings. Filiz has realized that her small idea has helped not just her, but the whole neighborhood.

Filiz has decided that she will keep running the club for as long as people keep showing up. "I started this club because I felt lonely," she says, "but now I understand that so many people around me were feeling the exact same way."
