Mehmet was twenty-two years old, and he had just finished university. After sending many job , he finally found work in a small café in Kadıköy, Istanbul. The was not high, but he was happy. He enjoyed meeting new people, and he liked making coffee for customers every morning.
For years, Mehmet had dreamed of buying a new phone. His old one was broken at the corner, and the battery lasted only two hours. "When I get my first , I will buy the best phone in the shop," he told his friends. He even chose the model and checked the price every week.
Yıllardır Mehmet yeni bir telefon almayı hayal etmişti. Eskisinin köşesi kırıktı ve pili sadece iki saat dayanıyordu. "İlk maaşımı alınca dükkândaki en iyi telefonu alacağım," dedi arkadaşlarına. Hatta modeli bile seçmişti ve fiyatını her hafta kontrol ediyordu.
At last, at the end of the month, the money came into his account. Mehmet could not stop smiling. On his way home, he stopped in front of the phone shop and looked at the shiny screen in the window. He wanted to go inside, but something made him .
He remembered his mother, Gülizar. After his father died, she had decided to work as a house cleaner to pay for his . Every morning at six, she left home with a small bag. She never about being tired, and she never asked him to help. She only said, "Study hard, my son."
Mehmet thought about his mother's hands. They were and red from years of washing floors. Last winter, she had been coughing for weeks, but she had to stop working. "I cannot to rest," she had said. Suddenly, a new phone did not seem so important.
He walked past the phone shop and went to a different one. There, he bought a warm winter coat, a pair of comfortable shoes, and a beautiful . He also stopped at a flower shop and bought a small bunch of white daisies. He avoided spending any money on himself.
That evening, he put the bags on the kitchen table. His mother was making dinner. "What is this?" she asked, surprised. "It is my first salary, Anne," he said quietly. "I would like you to stay home tomorrow. You have worked enough for both of us."
O akşam torbaları mutfak masasına koydu. Annesi akşam yemeği hazırlıyordu. "Bu da ne?" diye sordu şaşkınlıkla. "İlk maaşım Anne," dedi sessizce. "Yarın evde kalmanı istiyorum. İkimiz için de yeterince çalıştın."
Gülizar tried to speak, but she could not. She hugged her son and cried like a child. "I don't need presents," she finally whispered. "I only needed to see you happy." Mehmet smiled. "Then you are the richest woman in Istanbul, because I am the happiest man."
Two months later, Mehmet bought his phone. It was not the best one in the shop, but it was good enough. Every time he looked at it, he did not think about the screen or the camera. He thought about a woman who had given up everything so that he could have his dreams.
