Deli Dumrul and the Bridge

Deli Dumrul was a famous, hot-tempered warrior who built a wooden bridge over a completely dried-up riverbed. He forced everyone passing through to pay him thirty silver coins, and if someone refused to pass, he took forty coins by force.

The Creator agreed to spare his life on one condition: Dumrul had to find another soul who loved him enough to die in his place. Dumrul walked to his old parents, but they refused selfishly, saying life was too sweet to give away.

Finally, his beautiful wife stepped forward without any hesitation, volunteering to sacrifice her own life for him. Touched by this pure, unconditional love, the Creator forgave them both and granted them a long, peaceful lifetime together.
